tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278771842023-11-16T07:46:07.636-08:00OTISBURGMixing elements of pop punk, power pop, and the influence of early '80s hardcore punk, Otisburg strikes a geek driven chord with hooks, harmonies, and a great pop sensibility. Straight forward and no-frills, Otisburg plays quirky punk rock for nerds. Pocket protectors not included.

We have NOT fallen off the face of the earth. We have not broken up. We aren't even technically on any sort of hiatus.

Last month, our drummer decided that he could not continue with us. So the search began for a new drummer. To make matters worse, our guitar player decided that he was moving out of the country.

So now we are currently in search of both a drummer and a guitar player. We have some auditions coming up in the next couple of weeks but when we get a full lineup back up and running you can be sure that we will let everyone know.

Stay tuned to our Facebook page and Twitter page for any updates.

Things have been coming along pretty quickly for Otisburg ever since it was re-launched in Oklahoma City.

There are already some shows booked and the band has been diligently working to learn the songs.

Steve has taught the band 12 of the songs now. They are also working on writing some new tunes as well.

As mentioned recently, there is an "official" website posted at www.otisburg.us.

Check out upcoming shows at our Show Page.

The information on it is....well, there really isn't any information on it. It just has a big logo in the middle of it and contains links to our social media sites.

You can get there by going to www.otisburg.us

We practiced the following songs:

Doughnut Riot

Hey Jennifer

Goodbye California

Punkrocksong.com

Ubergeek

Based on the progress made last night, and if everything goes as we hope, we are making an early prediction that we will be ready to start doing shows in a month or two.

And we promise that it won't be the last.

So we ended 2013 off with a blast getting the Ubergeek EP released in December. It even made a top EPs of 2013 list (Oklahoma Lefty's Top 15 EPs of 2013).

2014 will prove to be an interested year for Otisburg. Steve has put together a lineup down in Oklahoma City so they can get out and start playing again. Scott will remain on board as a writing partner. The new lineup will be a 4-piece consisting of Steve on vocals, Scott Shannon on guitar, Danny Bull on bass and Dan Gerwin on drums.
Yeah, I know, we have dropped the ball on this thing but like we said last last time, Steve and Scott have been spreading themselves pretty thin lately with other projects.

Add to that Scott getting a new job AND he has decided to go back to school to work on a masters so he is studying for his entrance exam for that on top of learning a new job. Steve, on the other hand, is not so ambitious in that respect but he has been busy nonetheless.

So anyway, we do have an update for you. And it is pretty good news. Well, I suppose it is good news anyway.

The new EP is scheduled for release on December 10. That's right folks! Next Tuesday, the new Otisburg EP will see the light of day.

The EP is titled Ubergeek and will include 5 songs.

In the next few days, we will post another update with the track listing and maybe if you're lucky the cover art.

Until then.....
The 4 completed songs for the new Otisburg EP have still not been mastered yet but they are going to try to get that process done soon, or they may just release the EP without mastering the songs. Who knows.

It seems that both Steve and Scott have been spreading themselves too thin with all of their various "extracurricular" activities, the new EP has not been at the forefront of their thought process.

The only new thing to report is that once the new EP is released, it might be the last full on punk rock album you will hear from the band in a while. Steve is planning on re-launching the band down in the OKC area as a folk-punk style band. More news will follow on this in the coming weeks. He is still trying to get all of the principles together.

Stay tuned!

As I said in the last post, however, Steve and Scott have a lot of things on their plate and unfortunately Otisburg tends to get set on the back burner from time to time.
So here is an update.
Otisburg is still going to release a new EP and hopefully, if all goes well, it will be released before the end of the year. The way things are looking, there will be 4 songs included on the EP and all of the basic tracks for those songs are complete. The next step is to go through them and ensure the mix is right on them and then get them mastered. Once they are mastered, are at the very least nearing the end of the mastering process, an actual release date will be announced. \

Again, sorry it has been so long since the last update but I'm hoping to try and keep this thing updated more frequently (famous last words).

Steve here. I know it has been a while since we have posted an update and many of you seem to be wondering what is going on with Otisburg.

Well, we have not completely disappeared but at the same time both Scott and I have a lot of other things on our plate and aren't the greatest at keeping this site updated.

That being said, the long-awaited follow up to Born Yesterday is still forthcoming. Still unsure of the date. Almost all of the basic tracks for the CD have been recorded so the initial recording stage is nearly complete. Once the basic tracks are completed, the mixing process will begin and then the mastering. After that, we will have a much better idea of when the CD will be released.

On another note, you can keep track of Otisburg updates as they come in on the various social media platforms that we are on. Here are some links to those websites so you can "join" "like" "follow" "become a fan" or do whatever the site allows you to do to show that you are fans of Otisburg.
The song "Sweet Love" which was previously available as a download here on the Otisburg website, has now been released as a 'single' on our Bandcamp page!

In addition to the song "Sweet Love" the 'single' also includes another demo track that was recorded around the same time as the "Sweet Love" song called "Hands Off."

Keep in mind that both of these songs are only demos and not meant to be any sort of highly-produced songs. They are meant merely to give you a taste of what type of stuff is in store on the next release, which is coming around the corner.

Otisburg hails from Seattle, WA and plays a good mix pop punk, power pop, and folk punk. The band at this point is Scott and Steve and they are following in the footsteps of the Violent Femmes, playing their punk rock tunes acoustic style (while still plugging in for some numbers). Sure I might not be the most objective person in the world where it comes to this band (seeing as one of its members is one of my best friends) but my bias aside, Otisburg is a band that show a lot of promise. I highly suggest checking out the song “Hey Jennifer”. It’s my favorite.

Oklahoma Lefty: How did the band get together? What’s the history of the band?

Scott: I wrote the whole history down once and we might blog that on the MySpace, right Steve? The basics from my standpoint are that Brant, Steve, and I started the band. Brant and I knew each other from college and we finally sifted Steve out of Craigslist after meeting a lot of, shall we say, not so good fits. These included a Finnish guy who only wanted to play Van Halen and a Korean guy who wanted to make progressive instrumental rock. We almost gave up. After we met Steve, shared the songs we had been writing, and then heard his, we knew we had a band.

Steve: Yeah, we probably should put that history up on our MySpace. He is right about the basics though. I still remember that Craigslist ad. Something about band into theDescendents (and some other bands) needs singer. I was all over that. LoL!

OL: For those who have never heard Otisburg, how would you describe your sounds?

Scott: It’s pretty simple. Throw together ‘90s alternative and pop/punk and we’re somewhere in there.

Steve: I would have to say our sound is kind of random based on the mood that we are in. Currently, we are somewhere between a folk punk sound and an indie rock sound. I try not to label us though to be honest because I am not a big fan of genre labels because often they really do nothing to really describe what a band sounds like. Plus, I don’t want to let us get pigeon-holed into one style because you never know what we are going to be up to next!

OL: A couple of years ago you were poised to release an EP. What happened to that release?

Scott: Um… well, I’ll let Steve answer that question…

Steve: The EP, “Born Yesterday” became an internet-only released and was released in late 2007. You can hear the entire EP on our MySpace (www.myspace.com/otisburg)

OL: Describe your song writing process.

Scott: My songwriting process is way different than Steve’s. He can write songs in his head just riding the bus or whatever he happens to be doing. I usually have to have an instrument under my fingers to write something. Either way it all comes out in the end. After one of us writes the basic words and progressions we just play it for the other, throw ideas back and forth, and eventually the song comes out the way we like it. Sometimes we don’t have to change much if anything, though.

Steve: Yeah, sometimes I just come up with stuff off the top of my head and other times I have to work at it. But normally, I differ from Scott in that I usually come up with lyrics first and then either try and come up with a riff that fits it or I take to Scott and he comes up with something. From my viewpoint, Scott usually comes up with the music for a song first.

OL: Where did you get the name Otisburg?

Scott: Superman

Steve: When trying to come up with a name, we tried to come up with a really obscure super-hero/comic book type reference. I was sitting down thinking of the movie Superman: The Motion Picture and came up with Otisburg off the top of my head. I went to the other guys with that idea and the name stuck.

OL: I know that this is considered the worst question to ask, but oh well. What are your influences?

Scott: Not the worst, but I won’t try to give you any worse questions to ask! My influences are pretty much Weezer, The Descendents, and The Ramones.

Steve: I would say as far as writing goes, my influences are also The Descendents and Weezer. As far as my playing goes, I really can’t say. As a punk guitarist, my biggest influence has always been Greg Ginn (Black Flag) but as a singer, I have no idea. I guess I don’t really have an “influence” in that regard. I just do what I do.

OL: Are you currently working with any record labels?

Steve: No, not presently. We kind of stick to the DIY ethic.

Scott: Right now it’s such a cool time because you don’t really need a record label to get your music out there. We plan to just distribute anything we do online, whether as a CD through CDBaby.com or our own site, or digitally through iTunes or wherever.

OL: Any plans for a full length release?

Scott: Yeah, for sure! We feel the world deserves a full length! We’re in the writing process right now. Anyone who’s heard songs like Punkrocksong.com or Doughnut Riot can expect a set of songs in a similar vein. Not necessarily joke songs, but definitely with tongue firmly in cheek. So far we’ve got songs about garbage men, high school bands, and married people, among others. Also we’re playing around with the idea to do an acoustic release, either alongside of or part of the full length. Can’t really say for sure yet.

Steve: Yeah, hopefully sometime this year.

OL: If you could play a show opening up for any band, who would it be?

Steve: The Descendents!

Scott: Definitely Weezer for me. Those guys are great!

OL: Any final thoughts?

Steve: Yeah. Milk it does a body good!

Scott: Stick with us! Check back often on the MySpace because we’re working on demos for the new stuff and kind of planning to release them there as a way for people to give us feedback as we make the record!
Punk rock! Sent them to Steve. He'll add vox. Then I'll add vox. Then I'll mix, mix, mix. Anyway, so there's gonna be at least 6 on the new EP is what this means. I think we want a 7th. No new news other than that. Sayonara dudes!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27877184.post-27063553981559964022012-04-03T16:01:00.000-07:002012-04-03T16:01:04.787-07:004 songs and countingOK yeah we lapsed a little bit updating this puppy. Sorry about that folks. We have not been idle though. What do they say about idle hands? But I digress. Point is we have 4 songs basically finished up now. Sure there are little things here and there. When you're an artist you always got something to touch up it seems. But we have talked a lot more, Steve and I, about our plans with these songs. Long story short we think we are planning on doing 2-3 more songs and having an EP out to you this summer. We are going to forge on ahead for now and give you more details later. We almost decided to release a track listing, but we are going to hold up on that now because we want you to have a for-sure track listing rather than one based on what we know now. Because, who knows, it could always change if we write some new amazing song we wanna drop on there!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27877184.post-48157546869210074452012-03-11T17:07:00.000-07:002012-03-11T17:07:33.153-07:00Yet more recordingHey Otisburgers, Scott here, long time no chat. I just finished up recording some background vox. I might want to experiment a little more with my bg vox. I haven't done a lot of bg vox in the past so it's a little new for me. But I'm pretty near done. And that means that we are pretty near done entirely with two whole new songs.

Yes that's right. Steve recorded some awesome lead vocals for these tracks a little while ago and we just forgot to post an update here. So I am finishing off the mixing and bg vox on these suckers and then we'll kind of decide what we want to do with 'em.

Meantime we got more in the pipeline as ya know. So stay...focused. And patient. It's all coming your way. Later!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27877184.post-41650361097763921762012-02-24T19:00:00.001-08:002012-02-24T19:00:46.345-08:00YouTube!You can subscribe to us on YouTube now!

Otter Limitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975093403377963897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27877184.post-49205632188125577472012-02-22T12:11:00.000-08:002012-02-22T12:11:21.064-08:0002.22.2012 - Multiple Updates! We hope you all have enjoyed the demo we threw together of Sweet Love! (If not go download it now!) If that song proves to be liked enough we'll go ahead and record a "real" version of it!

We have a few updates to share:

Continuing Recording
After a small break due to colds and life stuff, we're back to recording. I've got half of an old-school-sounding punk song that I'm planning to finish off recording this evening to send away to Steve. Steve has plans to get some vocals and other tings started in the next week as well, so we are moving full ahead!

Cover Songs
How do you guys feel about cover songs? Steve and I pretty much have settled on a couple we'd like to do for fun while we're recording this other stuff. Just letting you know so you have something to look forward to...they won't be officially released or anything. At least we don't think they will. They'll just be free downloads here like the Sweet Love demo was, but ... they will be better than demo quality!

We're on YouTube!
I don't know if you were aware but we have some stuff on YouTube. It's actually where we have the most views so it's a great way to share songs with your friends. Check out the Goodbye California video off the original Born Yesterday release. FYI we have some plans to put up some better video. This one is basically just the photos out of our myspace profile as the song plays.

That's all for now. See you next time!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27877184.post-58890139947871961962012-02-14T20:03:00.000-08:002012-02-14T20:04:41.703-08:00Otisburg Now on Sound KickerOtisburg is now on Sound Kicker.
I got one more song recorded, rough mixed, and sent off to Steve for dropping some vox on.

And I started on a fourth.

The creative ideas over here are flowing. We're having lots of talks about what to do with all the songs we've written. Stand by. Good things come to those who wait. We'll be updating you on what we decide as soon as we know.

Until then,
